Nanticoke proudly supports the Trojans, but did you know that the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are also on the ice just 20 minutes away?
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL). The AHL is a professional minor ice hockey league serving as the direct development league for the NHL. Each of the 32 AHL teams also have affiliate teams in the NHL, all competing for one thing — the Calder Cup.

On January 18th, I had the opportunity to photograph practice at the Toyota Sportsplex in Wilkes-Barre. After a double-header, the Penguins went into Sunday with a 1 win-1 loss standing against the Hartford Wolf Pack (15-18) in preparation for their away game on Monday against the Springfield Thunderbirds (13-19).
At their 26-11-2-2 standing, the Penguins’ 4-1 win against the Wolf Pack and their 3-2 win against the Thunderbirds brought them back to number one in both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference, as well as second in the AHL only behind the Grand Rapids Griffins (30-3-2-1).
Wednesday’s home game against the Belleville Senators ended in an overtime loss 3-2. Penguins scorers of the night were left wing Rafaël Harvey-Pinard and center Atley Calvert. The next away game is against the Hershey Bears on Friday, January 23rd. While the next home game is against the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday, January 24th.
For the month of January, there are three games left, two home games and one away game. And then, it’s on to February for another full month of hockey updates.
