The cold is approaching, and it’s time to snuggle up with a blanket and relax as the snow flurries fall. This winter, I hope to share some recommendations for games, both electronic and physical, that can bring you peace and comfort while also bringing loved ones together.
First up is a true classic—Animal Crossing. In this daily farming and life simulation game, you embark on an adventure as the mayor of your own community. You can invite adorable animal villagers and decorate your world as you please. What makes this game special is that it syncs with real time, so as you experience the seasons, so do your villagers. During winter, many special guests and events take place throughout the months. You can craft or buy special items to decorate your world in the festive spirit. This game is available on nearly every Nintendo console, and the newest version, New Horizons, is set to receive an exciting update soon.
Another popular life simulation game is Minecraft. While I’m sure you’ve heard of it or seen videos—especially with the recent movie—actually playing it is a whole different experience. In Minecraft, you craft and scavenge resources to survive in a harsh world. Although this play style can be intense, there is a creative mode that allows you to decorate and build to your heart’s delight. You can also domesticate animals and make them your loyal companions.
Next, we have a physical card game called Spit. In this game, you go head-to-head with another player, racing to be the first to discard all your cards using the game’s mechanics. Spit is about speed and agility, but it also fosters bonding and friendly competition. Its card game format makes it accessible to anyone, and it’s easy to pick up.
Lastly, there’s chess, a complex game that can take years to master. It is thought-provoking and slow-paced, rewarding players who take their time to think through their actions. There are countless videos available that explain how to play and provide strategies.
This winter, make sure to take time for yourself and for others. It’s a season for rest and reset, so be sure to make the most of it.
