Our Flag Means Death is a beloved historical comedy/romance/drama about pirate main characters, Stede Bonnet (“The Gentleman Pirate), Edward Teach (“Blackbeard”), and the exciting and energetic crew that reside on the ship “The Revenge” as they go about on adventures. The show was released on March 3rd, 2022 as an original series on MAX and quickly grabbed the attention of many people around the world for its witty humor, compelling characters, and action that left many at the edge of their seats. 

Our Flag Means Death has characters that are based on real pirates in history, such as Blackbeard, Stede, Zheng Yi Sao, Israel Hands, and possibly a few more. This series puts its spin on the history, however, when it decided to try and figure out how it must have felt to be a crewmember of these pirates’ conjoined crew. 

The first season was met with positive reactions from fans, leaving everyone off on a cliffhanger. The second season came out in the summer of 2023, with fewer episodes than the first season and a shorter budget, which was the first sign of it not making it to the third season for many. Unlike the first season as well, the creator of the show, David Jenkins, decided to release the sequel to the newer season with an ending that would be deemed by most “satisfactory” as a precaution. 

Unfortunately, it seems everyone had correct estimates about the show being canceled, as in January of 2024, many actors as well as David himself brought to social media the news that MAX had canceled Our Flag Means Death.

They claimed the reason was due to “lack of viewership” and Max being unhappy with the amount of money it was bringing in, although many fans have been led to doubt that being the real reason. 

Be it due to low view count or other speculated rumors reasoning behind the show’s cancellation, it is with a heavy heart that the fans of their beloved pirate show.
