Virginia finally wins a National Championship

On Monday night, the Virginia Cavaliers won their first national championship in school history, when they defeated Texas Tech.

The Cavs won 85 – 77 in overtime. Virginia never trailed by more than four points. The Red Raiders mounted a comeback in the second half when they were down nine. Jarrett Culver could not make a three-pointer and an injured Tariq Owens only managed to score three points. Virginia’s star players had a much better game. De’andre Hunter dropped 27 points and Kyle Guy added 24 more to lead Virginia to the historic win. Hunter also nailed the game-tying three with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Red Raiders had a chance to win the game but fell short. Virginia would outscore Texas Tech 17 – 9 in the overtime period. Virginia shot better from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe. The Cavs won the battle of rebounds (+7) and had more assists than Texas Tech.

The Cavs were the lowest number one seed picked to win the national championship mostly due to the shock they endured last year when they lost to UMBC. The Cavs are among the favorites to win the NCAA basketball championship in 2020. The last time a team won back to back national titles was in 2006 and 2007, when Florida took home the championship. For now, it is celebration time in Charlottesville.
