NANTICOKE: Whether she’s on the soccer field, playing a riff on her guitar, or presiding over a class meeting, sophomore Lucy McGovern is a face you’ve likely seen around Greater Nanticoke Area. As this year’s Sophomore Class President, Lucy isn’t just holding a title; she’s on a mission to ensure every student in the Class of 2028 feels heard and inspired.

A Vision for the Class

Lucy’s decision to run for office was rooted in a simple but powerful philosophy: leadership through empathy.

“I ran for class office because I believe our class needs a president who listens, leads, and cares,” Lucy shared. Her goal for the year is to make the high school experience “fun, successful, and meaningful” for everyone, ensuring that school spirit at GNA remains at an all-time high.

For Lucy, serving isn’t just about the “President” label—it’s about the people. She views her role as a bridge between the student body and the administration, working tirelessly to ensure that her classmates’ ideas are reflected in events, fundraisers, and upcoming class trips.

The Balancing Act

How does a student-athlete who plays three sports (soccer, swim, and track) and participates in five clubs (Key Club, Student Council, FBLA, STEM, and Adventure Club) find time to lead a class? For Lucy, it all comes down to the “Three L’s”: Lists, Lead-time, and Logistics.

“I use calendars and lists to make sure that I complete my goals on time,” she explains. By prioritizing her schoolwork first, she creates the mental space needed to tackle her officer duties and her musical hobby—the guitar.

Advice to Her Younger Self

Looking back on her journey so far, Lucy has a message for the freshmen currently walking the halls: Don’t fear the stumble.

“I would tell my freshman self not to be afraid to make mistakes,” she says. “If you understand that failure is a part of success, it will allow you to take more chances, which will help you learn and grow into the best possible person you can be.”

Looking Toward the Future

While she is currently focused on making this year unforgettable for the sophomores, Lucy’s future is as diverse as her extracurricular list. Her post-graduation plans are a fascinating mix of grit and logic. She is currently considering two very different, yet equally ambitious, career paths: welding or law.

Regardless of which path she takes, Lucy McGovern’s commitment to GNA and her fellow students proves that she is already a “lawyer” for her classmates’ interests and a “welder” of a stronger school community.
