Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Deadpool & Wolverine. I watched this movie over the past summer, and my thoughts about it are still kind of all over the place. This is the first Deadpool movie that is officially in the MCU, and they make sure you know that in this movie. If you’ve never seen a Deadpool movie before, his character is one that is known for his crude jokes, fourth wall breaks, and very violent action scenes with a lot of blood. All of this is basically the complete opposite of Marvel, which is why I was very nervous that Deadpool would be toned down in this movie. However, I was very wrong, as I feel like there was more of the classic Deadpool than ever before, even sometimes being too much. This movie follows Deadpool as his peaceful existence comes crashing down when the TVA recruits him to help safeguard the multiverse. He then soon unites with Wolverine, who he’s always wanted to work with, to complete the mission and save his world. With this being a multiverse movie, there are a lot of cameos in this movie as well, which I will not say, but they do not disappoint in the slightest. However, sometimes I also feel like these characters are just being brought in for a cheap crowd reaction, without serving much purpose to the overall story and plot of the movie.
The villain of this movie is a woman named Cassandra Nova, who is the twin sister of X-Men founder, Charles Xavier. I am very indifferent about her character, as she did have some depth, however, lack of screen time made it hard to flesh her character out. The acting by Emma Corrin, who plays Cassandra, is very good as well in my opinion. My biggest issue with this movie comes with the plot, which is absolutely all over the place, and never stays on one goal. The acting by everyone involved is very good, as I think they dive in on Deadpool and Wolverine’s characters very well, but again similar to Cassandra, they don’t spend as much time on it as I would like. Instead, every time something very serious happens with one of our main characters, they go back to making crude Deadpool jokes without any substance. I will say that most of the jokes in this movie did land for me, however, the timing on a lot of them is very poorly timed and takes you out of the seriousness of some of the scenes. The score is absolutely fantastic in this, as there are so many amazing song choices that were placed in the right scenes. However, the cinematography was kind of hit and miss too, as some scenes were some of the best-looking ones I’ve seen, while others looked like they had a $10 million budget. However, maybe the best thing about this movie might be the action. There are multiple scenes that work very well for me, as they have a lot of gore, with good choreography.
I always rate the Marvel movies and shows and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are action, acting, cinematography, pacing, score, characters, ending, plot, protagonist, and antagonist. I rate all of those pieces 1-10 and then after that, I add up the scores of all 10 of them and get a total score out of 100. I gave this movie a 77/100, and like I’ve said there are a lot of things to really love about this movie. However, it feels like every time something really great happens, something bad happens immediately after and it brings down those really great parts. Overall, I still liked this movie, however, there are just too many things dragging it down to put it any higher.
