LUZERNE COUNTY — Are you interested in getting more involved in your community? Perhaps you’d like to help tackle the long-lasting issue of homelessness? If you’re free this upcoming Saturday, then The GNA Insider has an event for you. Why not spend a beautiful weekend supporting a cause worth every minute of your time?

Ruth’s Place is a women’s homeless shelter-based right in a lot of residents’ backyards in Wilkes-Barre. According to the Volunteers of America PA website, “Since 2003, Ruth’s Place has been dedicated to providing shelter and case management services for women experiencing homelessness while honoring the dignity of each guest. The staff at Ruth’s Place are pleased to provide onsite, individualized case management and employment development services. In addition, guests are encouraged to participate in a series of intensive group workshops…the program provides safe, temporary, and short-term emergency shelter for women experiencing homelessness in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties; coordinates and collaborates with other service providers and volunteers to assure the provision of services that address their basic physical, financial, health and spiritual needs; and assists sheltered guests to form and follow a permanent housing plan to quickly achieve stable, long-term housing.”

As an annual event to support the women of Ruth’s Place, Volunteers of America has announced their 14th Walk for Hope. Not only will the event be held outdoors at VOAPA’s Northeast Regional office, but it will also be available on Facebook Live. The virtual aspect is for anyone uncomfortable with going out amidst our current conditions. The Walk for Hope will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022, from 1-4 p.m. There will be a variety of food, music, raffles, and of course, fun! By supporting the annual Walk for Hope you can help to feed, clothe, protect, and empower the women of Ruth’s Place in their time of need.
