The return of the 1990 Trojanettes

In 1989, a group of young ladies started a journey with hopes of achieving one thing: a State Championship. In the exhibition season, the young ladies went 4-0 entering the Wyoming Valley Conference. They finished their regular season with 17 wins along with a Conference Championship. The team then continued on to win the District II Tournament 3-0 and District championship, sending them on their way to States. After the PIAA pitted them against some of the best teams throughout the state, they returned with 4 astonishing wins. The girls then traveled to Hershey to take on Beaver Falls during the State Championship game. Here, the young ladies played with an incredible amount of heart and desire to accomplish their one and only goal of receiving the gold. A 77-68 victory gave these girls the 1990 State Championship title.

It has been 25 years since the Nanticoke Trojanettes won the school’s first and only girls State Basketball Championship. The team, which consisted of 20 girls, was reunited on Wednesday, December 23th in the Nanticoke High School Gym. After being gathered together in a packed gym with only standing room, the team was astonished to see each other once again; some of them uttering in amazement, “I have not seen some of my teammates in 25 years.” The purpose of the ceremony was to honor the women who once swept the conference and inspired their city in 1990.

The event began with a small gathering of the families and players inside of the cafeteria. There, the women caught up with each other and reminisced on their greatest high school memories, particularly their undefeated State Championship season. Among the players was Cozlowski Uszello who stated in an interview, “Back then you are 17-18 years old. You couldn’t really grasp the profound impact you had on yourselves, the town or your teammates.”

Following the Varsity Boys game, the group of women ran out onto the court as they once had 25 years ago. Once on the court, the team was introduced to the cheering crowd, followed by a brief summary of their accomplishments throughout their season in 1990. At the end of the ceremony, the team raised their championship trophy in the air as if it was the day they accomplished their biggest goal.

As a tribute to the ladies undefeated season, the scoreboard read 30-0 and the time was set to 1990. The night ended with the current Girls Varsity Basketball game against North Schuykill.
