The return of the 1961 State Championship Team
Nanticoke Trojan Basketball saw quite an eventful evening on January 15th, 2016. In the varsity game between our very own Trojans and the GAR Grenadiers, our boys team won by a margin of 51-40. The countless amounts of perfect shots made by the varsity players won the game and put Nanticoke ahead into the number one spot in the division.
Before the game could start however, something else incredible took place: the return of the 1961 State Championship team! We honored the group of men who made their mark on Trojan history all but 55 years ago by unveiling a new banner with the names of all the members of the ’61 team. This provided an opportunity for one of Nanticoke’s most memorable sports teams to be introduced to a new generation. Not only did the event bring the students together with each other, but also with the entire community of Nanticoke. Bringing together the older residents of Nanticoke who remember being at the state championship in 1961 and the students who attend GNA today, is not an easy task. However, when something takes place that displays such a sense of community and appreciation, it seems as if there is no way to keep those two worlds apart.
GNA Basketball showcased every aspect of their team that night. The past, present, and future of the Trojans were all announced and honored in one night. It all started with the adoration of the ’61 team, and then moved on to the current players in the first half of the game. During half-time Coach Beggs had the Junior Varsity players introduced as well, showcasing the future of Nanticoke Basketball. After this, the game continued as the Trojans dominated GAR and took over the title as the current #1 team in division II. We couldn’t have asked for a more community-unifying and cheerful evening.
