March Madness 2018
The NCAA Men’s basketball tournament, popularly known as March Madness, captures the attention of millions of Americans and fans worldwide annually. March Madness 2018 was filled with many upsets, Cinderella stories, and games for the history books. The Villanova Wildcats won the 68-team tournament as one of the favorites from the beginning, but the excitement of this year’s edition came before the championship finale.
Since the tournament began, no one seed had ever lost against a sixteen seed, although history was made during the first round of games. One seeds had totaled a record of 128-0 vs. sixteen seeds, but that was changed when the UMBC Retrievers defeated the number one overall seed Virginia Cavaliers 74-54. This is recognized as the biggest upset of all time, but unfortunately UMBC lost their second round game to Kansas St. Even though it was short lived, UMBC had one of the greatest tournament runs of all time.
That wasn’t the only Cinderella story of this year’s tournament. The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers snuck into the field as an eleven seed in the South region. Led by multiple buzzer beating wins and internet sensation team chaplain, Sister Jean. Although she didn’t do any work on the court for the team, she led the team in pre-game prayer and readied the Loyola players, all the way to an appearance in the Final Four in San Antonio. Loyola’s miraculous run ended at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines, who defeated the Ramblers 69-57.
Through all of the madness it’s hard to discuss every game, but some other storylines were number nine seed Florida State making it to the Elite 8 in the West Region with upsets of number one seed Xavier and number four seed Gonzaga. Two of the regions had their favorites win, with Villanova winning the East and Kansas winning the Midwest. In the West, number three seed Michigan survive to the Final Four, and a series of upsets lead Loyola-Chicago to win the South. The championship game featured Villanova and Michigan. Led by sixth-man Donte DiVincenzo’s 31 points, Villanova was able to take their second title in three years.
