Axolotls are super cool amphibians that are famous for their amazing ability to regrow lost body parts, like limbs and even parts of their heart and brain. They’re originally from the lakes in Mexico, especially Lake Xochimilco, and people often call them “Mexican walking fish,” even though they aren’t fish at all!
One of their most striking features is their external gills, which make them look kind of like a creature from a fantasy movie.
Unfortunately, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild because of habitat destruction and pollution, but they’ve become popular as pets and in scientific research. Their incredible regenerative powers are not just interesting; they might help scientists learn more about healing and medicine in the future.
