Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Get Out. Get Out is a movie that was released in 2019, and is one of the best horror movies released in the past 15 years. The main reason for this is the amazing acting from all of the leads and very intriguing plot. This movie follows Chris, and how he and his girlfriend Rose have finally reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating and she invites him to a weekend getaway upstate with her parents, Missy and Dean. At first, Chris thinks the family’s overly accommodating attempts were because they were nervous about dealing with their daughter’s interracial relationship. However, as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing events occur and these events lead him to discoveries and a truth he couldn’t have imagined. I’m going to say right off the bat, this is truly one of my favorite movies of all time, and the first watch of this is special. The horror aspects of this movie are fantastic, as it’s not jump scares, but the movie lets you know something bad is happening, but you can’t see what’s going on yet. It does a great job of leaving you uneasy and on the edge of your seat needing to see what happens next. Daniel Kaluuya does an amazing job bringing this to life as Chris. One of my favorite performances ever as he just truly knocks it out of the park on every level imaginable. The rest of the cast also fall in behind him very well and everyone else does a very good job as well.
The other leads in this movie are Allison Williams as Rose, Catherine Keener as Missy, and Bradley Whitford as Dean. Whitford as Dean is also a great performance, as he leaves you very confused the whole movie. You can’t tell if he likes or doesn’t like Chris and that plays a huge influence on the whole movie. Another performance, which is smaller in terms of screen time, but a very important role, is LaKeith Stanfield as Andre Logan King. He’s the first character you see in the movie, and he appears again later on. Like I said, he doesn’t have a lot of screen time in the movie, but his role in the whole plot cannot be understated. The thing that I think sets this apart from other horror movies is its ending. I loved the ending to this movie and I think it wrapped everything up perfectly. The dialogue is also amazing in this, as the dialogue is the main way the writers push forward the plot. The direction in this is also fantastic which shouldn’t be a surprise since it’s directed by the great Jordan Peele. Even though he only has 3 movies out, he’s one of my favorite directors ever. Every one of his movies is amazing, with this being the best out of the bunch. He just knows how to leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more and just the overall direction he takes with his movies is just amazing to watch.
I always rate movies and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are: acting, cinematography, pacing, score, horror, side characters, ending, plot, main character, and dialogue. I gave this movie a 95/100, and as I said right at the beginning this truly is one of my favorite movies ever. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this movie at all. Even the cinematography and pacing is great, which is a very hard thing to nail in a movie for me. But everything looks fantastic and the movie moves so fast and you never feel bored. Just a great watch and like I said one of the best movies in the last 15-20 years.
