Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of The Truman Show. Truman Show is a movie from 1998, and it ended up being a comedy/Sci-fi classic. The main reason for this becoming as legendary of a movie as it has is because of its amazing and unique plot that was executed to perfection. This movie follows Truman Burbank and how his life is a part of a massive TV set and production, the only thing being he has no idea. The executive producer of this show Christof orchestrates “The Truman Show,” which is a live broadcast of Truman’s every move captured by hidden cameras. Christof tries to control Truman in every way possible, even removing his true love Sylvia from the show when she wants Truman to know the truth. They then replace Sylvia with a new “love interest” in Meryl. However, throughout the movie, Truman slowly starts discovering the truth, and he must decide whether or not to act on it. As I said this is a very unique and interesting plot, and I believe it was perfectly executed and the pacing for this was very good too. Truman is played by Jim Carrey, who’s one of my favorite actors of all time, and he nails it in this role. This isn’t the typical Jim Carrey comedy either, as it gets serious at times with the story and he’s able to capture the emotions of Truman very well.
Christof is the antagonist of this movie, and Ed Harris does a pretty good job at portraying this money-hungry boss. He doesn’t care what he’s doing to Truman and just toying with him is insanely messed up, he just wants to make as much money and get as much viewership as he possibly can. There really isn’t anything I dislike about this movie honestly. I think the acting from everyone involved is very good, and they really make this story they’re telling come alive. The pacing and dialogue are very good as well, and Carrey has some very good lines throughout the movie. The ending is also very good and well executed and wraps up this sort of chaotic movie very well. I say sort of chaotic because at times it does get very hectic with Christof doing everything he can to shield Truman from the truth by any means possible. With this also being a very unique plot, some of the moments that come from this movie are a little over the top, but it works within the movie and the story they’re telling very well.
I always rate movies and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are: acting, cinematography, pacing, score, comedy, side characters, ending, plot, main character, and dialogue. I gave this movie a 97/100, and as I’ve said through this whole thing, it truly is just a fantastic movie. One of my favorite movies from the 90’s, and just one of my favorites of all time in general. Peter Weir does a great job directing this, and it truly just couldn’t have been executed better.
