Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Companion. As of the making of this article, this movie is still in theaters, and I saw it about a week ago. This movie follows a group of friends going on a weekend getaway that goes off the rails when a subservient android built for human companionship goes haywire, turning the whole getaway into being very bloody and violent. We’ll start with all the characters, which are the 5 friends and the owner of the lake house they’re staying in. The two leads are the couple, Iris and Josh, as everything revolves around them. Kat and her boyfriend, Sergey, own the lake house. Finally, there is also Eli and Patrick. Josh, Kat, and Eli are the main 3 friends, as they show that Iris and Patrick have now joined this group just through being involved with someone in it, and they’re all meeting Sergey for the first time as well. Easily my favorite two in this movie are Iris, who’s played by Sophie Thatcher, and Josh who’s played by Jack Quaid. Both of their performances are very good for different reasons, but I think I was more impressed with Quaid, as I’ve never really seen him in this type of role before, and I really think he nailed it, however, this is also a big breakout performance for Thatcher.
I was a big fan of the plot in this, as I thought it was very unique and different, however, I was afraid if the execution was going to be there, but I’m glad to say it was. Everything moves at a very fast pace and that works to the movie’s advantage very well. The movie is only 1h 37m, but it still flies by and feels even faster than that, by how fast-paced it is. The whole story still felt fleshed out though and I don’t think that it was necessarily rushed whatsoever. The thriller element to this was very good as well, as they used the secluded lake house environment to their advantage very well. I also really like the usage of blood and gore. It wasn’t overused at all, and I truly believe that helped elevate the movie. When it did get more bloody and the gore came to light, it was very very well done and made it way more meaningful and impactful to the story, especially with how they were telling this story and the meaning behind some of the violent acts. Everything plays into something else too which I liked a lot because I didn’t feel like there was any wasted time, because of everything connecting to one another. There was also a decent amount of comedy throughout, and for a thriller movie, it wasn’t bad at all.
I always rate movies and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are: acting, cinematography, pacing, score, gore, side characters, ending, plot, main character, and dialogue. I gave this movie a 79/100, and like I’ve said throughout this everything in this is very good. I just don’t think there’s anything that’s necessarily perfect in this movie, and the cinematography and dialogue can both be a bit choppy at times, which brings it down slightly.
