Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Twisters. This movie came out this past summer, and unfortunately, I never got the chance to see it in theaters so I had to watch it at home. This movie is a remake of the original movie ‘Twister’ from almost 30 years ago. This one follows Kate Cooper after she is haunted by a devastating tornado when she gets lured back into the open plains by her friend Javi. She then meets Tyler Owens, a charismatic social-media superstar who is known for being a “tornado wrangler.” I was honestly surprised by how much I liked this. I knew there was going to be some crazy scenes involving the tornadoes, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the story was, especially involving Tyler and Kate. Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones were both great in these lead roles, showing great emotion when needed while being very funny and charismatic together. They just bounced off each other insanely well and whenever they weren’t on screen together you were just waiting for them to be back on screen again. I also like Kate’s story in this, as she goes through a lot in the beginning of the movie and they show the trauma from that pretty well throughout the whole thing.
This is usually where I would talk about the antagonist, but there really isn’t an antagonist in this one. All of the main characters are just all trying to find different ways to stop these tornadoes and help these small towns in the Midwest. Another part of this movie I was a big fan of is obviously the huge set pieces with the tornadoes. There are so many unique and different things they do with these tornadoes that are very different from the first movie. I was worried that they’d just copy a lot of the set pieces from the first movie, but luckily they didn’t. The ending was pretty good as well as they left room for a potential sequel with these characters. The movie also did very well in theaters so it wouldn’t surprise me whatsoever if it did get that sequel.
I always rate movies and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are: emotion, acting, cinematography, pacing, score, side characters, ending, plot, main character, and dialogue. I gave this movie a 82/100, and like I’ve said this is a very good movie. A lot of the stuff is very good, but there’s not a lot of perfection in this movie, which isn’t a bad thing at all, but there’s kind of a cap on how high the score can go.
