National Monte Cristo Day is celebrated on September 17th to honor the tasteful Monte Cristo sandwich.
This day the sandwich was established in 2015 by Bennigan’s. Bennigan’s was a restaurant renowned for its version of the sandwich.
Fun fact, this sandwich has roots in the French croque-monsieur!
The Monte Cristo is a well-made sandwich with a combination of ham, cheese, and sometimes turkey, sandwiched between slices of bread, dipped in egg batter, and then deep fried to golden perfection. Often it may be dusted with powdered sugar and served with a side of jam. This sandwich can be savory, sweet, or both!
Wherever you are today, don’t forget to stop at a restaurant or make your own Monte Cristo to enjoy.
