This months Genre’s Tour will not be written about one specific category. In this feature, I will be talking about punk rock/pop, indie pop/rock, nu metal, and alternative rock.
Starting off with a punk rock band called The Offspring… this band is from Garden Grove, California, and was formed in 1983 by the name “Manic Subsidal,” but changed it to the name we know today, in 1984. Dexter Holland and Greg K. composed the group, later adding “Noodles” as their guitarist. Some of their most-known songs are “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” “Why Don’t You Get A Job,” “Gone Away,” and my personal favorite “Self Esteem.” One of their biggest accomplishments is, selling over 40 million records during their 39-year career.
Next up is the popular nu metal group, Limp Bizkit. Fred Durst and Sam Rivers formed this intense band Florida, in 1994. Many people blame this band for the hellish activities of destruction done during the Woodstock 99′ music festival. When they played their hit “Break Stuff” the crowd when crazy and resorted to heavy and extreme vandalism and violence like ripping down building with their bare hands to crowd surf on the materials, lighting fires, and many many many assaults. The attendees of the show were acting like this before the band even went on stage, but did they make matters worse? Was it just the adrenaline from people seeing the band? Was it the suggestive song they performed, despite knowing the peoples’ actions during previous artist’s showing? It’s something that has been debated since the terrible incident that was supposed to be a fun event. Some of their most known songs are “Break Stuff” of course “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Rollin’,” “Nookie,” and “My Way.”
Turning away from all the violence now, TV Girl will be discussed. I absolutely love this band, they have such an upbeat and calming vibe. In San Diego in 2010, Trung Ngo and Brad Petering came together and formed the group. Despite being a newer band, don’t let that fool you into thinking this band doesn’t have some amazing accomplishments and songs that have millions of plays. They’re known for “Lovers Rock,” “Taking What’s Not Yours,” “Not Allowed,” “Birds Don’t Sing,” and many more amazing songs.
