On this day we celebrate one of America’s favorite snacks – the pretzel!
Whether you prefer a bag of nice, crunchy, salty pretzels, or a big warm soft cinnamon pretzel, both options are great choices.
The origin of the pretzel has a christian background, and it is believed that they were developed by monks. In 610 AD, an Italian monk invented pretzels as rewards for children who learned their prayers. These strips of baked dough were folded to resemble arms crossing the chest, and he called them “pretiola” (little rewards).
Another source attributes the invention to a monastery in southern France. The looped pretzel may also be related to a Greek Ring bread used in monasteries a thousand years ago.
In the Catholic Church, pretzels held religious significance for both ingredients and shape. So, on National Pretzel Day, enjoy some pretzels, and make your own using a soft pretzel recipe.
