‘ ‘ You know you’re bright as the morning
As soft as the rain
Pretty as a vine
As sweet as a grape. . . ‘ ‘
Andrew John Hozier-Byrne is an Irish singer/songwriter, known professionally as Hozier. His music draws a lot from folk, blues, and soul, and usually draws themes from religion, folklore, politics, etc.
As of March 22, 2024, Hozier released a new song, titled ”Too Sweet.”
With Hoziers’ music being notorious for having poetic lyrics, it can be difficult to understand what his songs are intended to mean.
‘ ‘ It can’t be said I’m an early bird
It’s 10 o’clock before I say a word
Baby, I can never tell
How do you sleep so well?
You keep tellin’ me to live right
To go to bed before the daylight
But then you wake up for the sunrise
You know you don’t gotta pretend
Baby, now and then . . . ‘ ‘
Hozier is known for talking about love in a very poetic manner. Whether it be tough love, sensual love, or a different, more niche way of experiencing love – he’s got it covered.
In this song, we can tell that he is talking about a person who seems to be a pure, bright soul. Someone who maybe hasn’t lived the nitty-gritty of life, or maybe doesn’t understand the extent of his nitty-gritty. If you are an avid Hozier listener, you’ll know that he is not afraid to speak his mind regarding his feelings about these things.
‘ ‘ Don’t you just wanna wake up
Dark as a lake
Smellin’ like a bonfire
Lost in a haze?
If you’re drunk on life, babe
I think it’s great
But while in this world
I think I’ll take my whiskey neat . . . ‘ ‘
With these lyrics, it’s very obvious that in this song, the portrayer is someone who is convinced there is no point in living life to the fullest extent. They are mellow, and see no rhyme or reason to change anything about the way they live. They just live, no ifs, ands or buts.
The portrayer is trying to convince the person that they truly don’t need to move out of their comfort. They are too solemn, somber, and experienced, whilst their person is nothing but a bundle of light and joy in their eyes, someone who still has the whole world within them.
Now, a lot of people have been speculating that this song is about an older person who is in love with another person who is too young. That is simply not the case.
If you pay attention and analyze the lyrics, you’ll understand that this song is simply about a somber, experienced person who doesn’t want to taint the jovialness of their lover – hence, “You’re too sweet for me.”
The tone, rhythm, and melody in this song comes together beautifully in a wonderful treat for your ears. I give this song a 10/10, and I highly recommend giving it a listen.
If you love alternative indie with poetic lyrics, I recommend listening to Hozier, available on any streaming platform.
