5th Grade Career Day

Greater Nanticoke Area Elementary Center hosted Career Day, introducing 5th graders to possible future careers

Our futures are so bright!

GNA CAMPUS— Greater Nanticoke Area has held its annual 5th grade Career Day festival on March 14, 2024.

Career Day is a special event that is hosted annually for the 5th grade in the elementary center of the Greater Nanticoke Area School District.

With the future rapidly approaching, it’s vital that our youth is introduced to what their futures may hold. Whether it be construction, business managing, teaching, etc. — there is always something to be taught.

The purpose of school is to prepare kids for the future, giving them critical thinking and math skills, as well as literary skills. In reality, though, many kids enter the world confused and unsure. That inherently sets our futures up for failure.

It’s difficult to ensure a strong future for our youth if they aren’t sure what the future could hold. With events like Career Day, kids can be prepared for the future.

During Career Day, students had the opportunity to take a quiz and see what careers would suit them the best. With those options, they were instructed on which career leaders to visit.

Students who attended not only got to learn careers they knew of and enjoyed but also careers they’d never heard of, giving them new options that could take them very far in the future. From nursing to photography, students got to see many different futures that they could pursue.

“It was really cool to see what these people do,” a 5th grader told us. “I never knew a lot about careers and jobs and stuff, but now, I feel like I know stuff I’d want to do in the future.”

It was amazing to travel around the elementary center and meet all of these amazing career leaders. Learning about the work they put in every day was awesome to learn about, and it definitely was a successful day.

Mrs. Lukowski is a wonderful teacher and deserves the utmost respect for taking the initiative to ensure the future of our youth by hosting these events. Career Day 2024 was a day that we, as well as the students involved, will remember.

Mateo J. Ricci, Student Writer

My name is Mateo Ricci, and I’m a Junior here at Greater Nanticoke Area High School. I’m originally from the Bronx, New York. I began attending Nanticoke in the 5th grade, but not before attending 8 other schools whilst my family moved around. I’ve always been interested in the arts, and I’ve been an active member of the GNA Marching band, Jazz band, and Concert band for 3 years now. I play the Alto and Tenor Saxophone, Bass Guitar, Electric Guitar, and Percussion, including Mallet Percussion. I’m also active in the GNA theater program, chorus, and student council. I’m the oldest of 8 siblings, and I consider myself an activist and strive to amplify the voices of others who think they don't have one. My hobbies consist of writing/playing music, drawing, and literature. I also love to play video games with my friends and go to football games with the band every Friday. I am a firm believer that music can bring people together as equals, and as a queer, autistic Hispanic person, I believe that everybody IS equal, and deserves equal opportunities in life. I would love to pursue my passions as careers. After High School, I hope to attend a college in New York where I will major in mass communications, and minor in music theory and human rights. I am extremely passionate about the futures of our generations, and I will work to ensure that they have one and want to encourage others to do the same.

Keeth Beck, Student Writer

My name is Keeth Beck, and I am a junior at the Greater Nanticoke Area High School. I have been attending GNA since kindergarten, and I have taken on a few programs over the years. I am in our school’s Jazz, Concert, and Marching Band, and as of last year, I am a member of the National Honor Society. I also enjoy theater and have recently become active in our school's theater program. This is my first year in journalism, and I look forward to writing more in my senior year! When I am not at school or hanging out with my friends, I am usually at home cooking, drawing, playing guitar, or practicing piano. I also enjoy playing video games in my spare time, especially with others. I have always enjoyed the arts, so I'd love to attend an arts college in the future to pursue it as a career. I have a few colleges in mind, such as Marywood University or the School of Visual Arts in New York. I look forward to the future, and I'm excited to see what it has in store for me and my peers!

Nathan Mullin, Student Writer

My name is Nathan Mullin, and I am 16 years old. I am a junior at Greater Nanticoke Area High School. I lived and attended Greater Nanticoke Area High School all my life. I am learning the piano. I started playing it a little bit over a year ago as of writing this. I also love archery; around 5 years ago I went to an archery range that had guns, bows, crossbows, etc. Casey Kaufhold, who played in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, happened to be there and called me a natural at the bow after seeing how I did - this sparked my interest. I also have a small passion for writing though I am not exactly talented at this point. After high school, as of now, I don’t have definite plans. I’m probably going to go to college, though I am not sure which one. If I had to choose a career for myself in the future, I would like to either make something of an archery career or become any form of writer.

Alex Avery, Student Writer

My name is Alex Avery, and I'm a junior at GNA. I have lived in Nanticoke and attended GNA all my life. This is my first year in journalism. I'm extremely excited about journalism because I haven't taken a class like this before. Some of my hobbies are going outside with friends, swimming, and playing video games. I love the beach; it is my favorite place to be during the summertime. My favorite part of the beach is the ocean and the way the warm sand feels on my feet. I also really enjoy watching movies. My favorite movie is "Catch Me If You Can," with Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. After high school, I want to become a nurse. I plan to attend LCC. I've heard that they have an excellent nursing program. I am most likely going there for 2-3 years then jumping right into the nursing field.
