Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Dune: Part Two. After watching the first one, this was one of my most anticipated movies of the year already, and it absolutely delivered. Coming out in early March, I feel like I’ve already seen the movie of the year and it’s going to be nearly impossible to top it. Dune 2 is already proving to be a massive box office success too, making almost $500 million in the first month. This movie follows the same main character Paul Atreides uniting with the Fremen people and seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. He must also choose between the love of his life and the fate of the universe and try to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee. This movie has a long runtime of 2h and 46m, but you don’t feel that runtime at all and it honestly feels less than 2 hours. The main thing I loved about the first movie was its immense world-building and the build-on deep lore with this very complicated universe. I love how in this movie they expanded on the lore and went even deeper into how insane this universe is. Not that these movies need action necessarily, but this movie has a lot more than the first, and it’s used very well. Whenever there is a big action scene, it feels important, and the choreography is always fantastic for every scene. The cinematography is close to being the best thing in this movie, as every shot just seems like it’s topping the last.
The main villain of this movie is Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, who is the nephew of the last movie’s main villain, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. The emperor is also another villain in this movie, as he is the one who pulls all of the strings on the Harkonnens and orchestrates the attacks on the Atreides family last movie. Christopher Walken is fantastic as the emperor in his small screen time, and the performance by Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha is absolutely fantastic. It’s unfortunate that Austin Butler’s screen time wasn’t very much in this movie, because he is just stunning to watch. Some other characters in this movie are Chani, who is one of the top people in the Fremen, and also the love interest of Paul Atreides. Zendaya is fantastic in this role, and once again she knocks it out of the park. Rebecca Ferguson returns as Lady Jessica, and she might’ve had the most underrated performance out of anyone in the movie. Not saying she’s the best, but she’s not getting as much praise as she should be right now. Javier Bardem plays Stilgar, who is basically the leader of the Fremen, and I’m not as big of a fan of his performance as a lot of other people seem to be, but he’s still very good nonetheless. Finally, as I mentioned earlier, Paul Atriedes who was played by Timothee Chalamet, and I truly think this is the best performance of his young career so far. He is absolutely amazing, and I also believe that nobody else could play this character but him after this movie.
I always rate the movies I watch and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are action, acting, cinematography, pacing, score, characters, ending, plot, protagonist, and antagonist. I rate all of those pieces 1-10 and then after that, I add up the scores of all 10 of them and get a total score out of 100. I gave this movie a 99/100, and this is already going to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I just don’t like giving out pure 100’s, as they’re saved for my actual top 2-3 movies. But everything in this movie is basically perfect, even the score which I haven’t even mentioned yet which is done by Hans Zimmer, who’s probably the greatest to ever do it. There are no holes in this movie, and I would really suggest anyone go see it before it’s out of theaters. Just make sure to watch the first one beforehand.
