Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Deadpool. With the Deadpool franchise finally being bought by Marvel, and the third movie of the franchise finally coming out this summer, I thought it was only right to review the first two. This is easily one of my favorite comic book movies, with one of my favorite castings of all time with Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. This movie is Rated-R, and it was the first R-rated movie brought into the MCU. This entire movie is very violent, with a lot of blood, and a lot of hilarious comedy. Since I’m doing a review on this, I’m going to emphasize that it’s Rated-R, and you can definitely tell throughout the entirety of the movie. This movie is based around Wade Wilson (Deadpool), who works as a mercenary. His life crashes down when an evil scientist known as Ajax tortures, disfigures, and transforms Wade into Deadpool. He still has the same fighting skills from being a mercenary, but now he also has accelerated healing powers. The rest of the movie is about him trying to hunt down Ajax and get revenge. Along with this, there’s also a side love story with Wade and Vanessa, who was his girlfriend before he got deformed.
The villain in this movie, as I said earlier, is Ajax. All I can really say about him is he’s fine. Nothing more, nothing less. He’s not in it too much so you can’t really get any sort of backstory on him. The story with the “evil scientist” is about as generic as you can get. Luckily though, this movie has one of the greatest anti-heroes of all time with Deadpool. Like I said earlier, the action and comedy are by far the best parts of this movie. I can probably count on one hand the amount of jokes that didn’t make me laugh. The cinematography is good. Nothing special or anything, but definitely nothing to complain about with it. Some of the other characters in this are Weasel, who is just Wade’s friend. He just plays more comedic relief and he does it well. Deadpool has two mutant allies, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. They’re nothing special, but they bounce off Deadpool pretty well so it’s definitely nothing to complain about.
I always rate the Marvel movies and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are action, acting, cinematography, pacing, score, characters, ending, plot, protagonist, and antagonist. I rate all of those pieces 1-10 and then after that, I add up the scores of all 10 of them and get a total score out of 100. I gave this movie a 92/100, with the only thing truly bringing it down is the villain. The pacing is also good, but the movie does have one or two dragging moments. Besides that, the action, score, characters, and ending were all near-perfect. Comedy isn’t even a part of the rating process, but if it was, it definitely would’ve bumped the score up even more.
