With Halloween just around the corner, many people find themselves rewatching their favorite holiday classics; Scream, Friday the 13th, and The Nightmare on Elm Street are just a few prime examples of such movies. However, not as many people talk about replaying their favorite festive fall video games. As someone who has always had an appreciation for indie games and scary stories, I would have to suggest Night in the Woods as one of the most interesting games with an autumn setting.
The game starts off with our main character, Mae Borowski, coming home from college in mid-October, on Halloween night however, she and her friends find out that there are some shady things going on around town. People are going missing, and it seems there’s some kind of paranormal activity in the area. Over the span of the game, it gets closer and closer to winter as she and her friends come closer and closer to discovering what’s going on around in their neighborhood Possum Springs.
The game has a very stylized way of drawing its characters and settings, as well as a fun platforming aspect that is frequently implemented. The characters all have very distinct personalities as well, with their own different struggles, styles, and strengths to set them apart.
If you are looking for a spine-chilling mystery game to play this October, I would recommend playing Night in the Woods.
