Are you looking for something to get you in the fall spirit? These books are just a few fan favorites and are definitely worth reading.
Our first best fall read is We Were Liars by E. Lockhart – (Psychological Thriller.) The novel has won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Young Adult Fiction, also listed as an ALA Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults in 2015. The novel focuses on the theme of the consequences of one’s mistakes and is centered on the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family.
Next, Starling House by Alix E Harrow – (Fantasy fiction, gothic fiction, dark fantasy.) A grim and gothic new tale about a small town haunted by secrets that can’t stay buried. Then the sinister house that sits in the middle of it all. This is the story of a dying town and the people that are still living there. It’s a search for a home, for a life, for anything other than what she was born into.
Then, Daisy Darker: A Novel by Alice Feeney – (Thriller.) This family was as dark as dark can be. This book is both character-driven and plot-driven.
Another good read is Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque by Joyce Carol Oates – (Horror.) Haunted is a collection of sixteen tales that range from simple ghost stories to absolute terror. These tales are multi-layered, complex, and gripping fiction that is scary, to say the least.
Our next read is Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward – (Southern Gothic.) She is a two-time National Book Award winner, the youngest winner of the Library of Congress Prize for Fiction, and MacArthur Fellow. This story is about an enslaved girl in the years before the Civil War, from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and then into a Louisiana sugar plantation. As beautifully rendered as it is, it’s heart-wrenching.
Lastly, the last best read of fall is How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix – (Horror Fiction.) This story explores the way your past can haunt you. In this book, we have emotional storytelling, unnerving storytelling, gory horror, and a bit of comedy.
Now, always try to make sure there aren’t any sudden noises and keep the lights on, good luck!
