Autism Acceptance Month
The month of April is Autism Acceptance Month. Formerly Autism Awareness Month, Autism Acceptance Month focuses on informing the public on how they can support, empower, and include autistic and neurodivergent people.
This month enables autistic people by giving them the stage to advocate for themselves and have the world listen to their voices.
Part of autism acceptance is autism awareness, so what exactly is autism? Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disorder that creates differences in development, processing, communication, and other aspects of daily life. ASD exists on a spectrum, and every autistic person experiences autism differently. Those with ASD think differently from neurotypicals, but Autism Acceptance Month gives us another reason to remember that different doesn’t equal less than.
The purpose of Autism Acceptance Month is to Celebrate Differences. This, essentially, means listening to autistic voices and sharing resources to benefit the autistic community. So please, engage for autism acceptance month and show your support!
