Course Selection
What’s Being Offered for 23-24?
Here at GNA, every student has the option to select their own classes and adapt their schedules to their own interests and future career plans. Along with the many standard/advanced academic courses, many electives and AP classes are offered to expand students’ horizons. Here is a brief list of the many courses that will be offered for the 2023-2024 School Year:
AP English Literature and Composition – Offered to 12th-grade students with proficient or advanced scores on the Keystone English exam. AP Literature is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
AP Statistics – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students with a 90 or above in Algebra 2 or Pre-calculus/Trigonometry. AP Statistics is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
AP Calculus AB – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students with a 90 or above in Pre-calculus/Trigonometry Honors. AP Calculus is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
College Ready Math – Offered to 12th-grade students who have taken/will be taking Alegbra 2 or Concepts of Algebra 2. College Ready Math is offered through collaboration with LCCC and is equivalent to Math 101.
AP Biology – Offered to 12th-grade students with a 90 or above in Advanced Biology Honors and Chemistry 1. AP Biology is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
Engineering Scientific Research and Design Honors – Offered to 12th-grade students with a 90 or above in Algebra 2 and who are/will be taking Physics 1 Honors. Scientific Research and Design is STEM-focused and is designed for students interested in entering the engineering field.
AP US History – Offered for 11th or 12th-grade students with a 90 or above in Modern American History Honors or World Cultures Honors. AP US History is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
AP US Government and Politics – Offered to 12th-grade students with a 94 or above in World Cultures Honors or a 90 or above in AP US History. AP US Government is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
French 1 – French 4 Honors – Offered at all grade levels and taken consecutively. French classes enhance language skills and cultural appreciation for French-speaking cultures.
Spanish 1 – Spanish 4 Honors – Offered at all grade levels and taken consecutively. Spanish classes enhance language skills and cultural appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures.
Career Development/Job Shadowing – Recommended by guidance for 11th-grade students. Career development guides students through the job application process and gives students the opportunity to shadow jobs.
Advanced Living Skills 1-3 – Offered to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade and taken consecutively. Advanced Living teaches everyday tasks like cooking, budgeting, and societal values.
Art 1-4 – Offered to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade and taken consecutively. Art teaches students the fundamentals of artistic skills.
Basic Living Skills 1 – Offered to students in 9th and 10th grade. Basic Living gives students the skills needed for family life, including family relations, money management, and nutrition.
Music Appreciation 1-4 – Offered at all grade levels and taken consecutively. Music Appreciation teaches the appreciation and artistry of music and theater.
Computer Science Principles – Offered to 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade students who have taken Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Honors, or Concepts of Algebra 1B.
AP Computer Science Principles – Offered to 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade students with a 90 or above in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 Honors. AP Computer Science is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
Computer Science A – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students who have taken Computer Science Principles, AP computer science principles, Algebra 2, Algebra 2 Honors, or Concepts of Algebra 2.
AP Computer Science A – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students who have taken Computer Science Principles or AP computer science principles or with a 90 or above in Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 honors. AP Computer Science is a college-level course, and the AP exam will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
Film as Literature – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students with teacher recommendations. Film as literature explores the art of screenwriting and developing scripts.
Journalism 1-3 – Offered to 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade students and are taken consecutively. Journalism students write articles, take pictures, and put together The GNA Insider.
Law Studies – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students. Law studies teaches the fundamentals of government and the ethical basis of criminal, civil, and tort law.
History of Rock and Roll – Offered to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. History of Rock and Roll familiarizes students with the history of various styles of rock and roll music.
Music Theory 1-2 Honors – Offered to 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade students and taken consecutively. Music theory provides the option for the AP exam and will give students the opportunity to earn college credit.
Psychology 1 – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students. Psychology focuses on human growth and development, brain structure, and sub-fields of psychology.
Public Speaking/Poetry – Offered to 11th and 12th-grade students with an English teacher recommendation. The first half of the course focuses on developing public speaking skills and the second focuses on poetry and poetic analysis.
Technology Exploration 1-3 – Offered to students at all grade levels and taken consecutively. Tech Exploration focuses on construction technology and creation of industrial products.
