Ant-Man spoiler-free review

Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Ant-Man. I had never watched this movie before a few days ago and I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it. In the movie, Scott Lang is a master thief and the movie starts with him getting released from prison. Scott Lang is recruited and trained by Dr. Hank Pym and Scott gets an armed suit that allows him to shrink in size, possess superhuman strength, and control an army of ants. Also, Hank Pym had a business that got taken over by his former protege Darren Cross who is also Yellowjacket. There is not a lot of action at all in this movie outside of a small cameo fight scene and the final 15-20 minutes. It is very story driven but it works very well mainly because the story was well done and actually made you invested in the characters.

I thought Darren Cross was a solid villain throughout the movie. Definitely not one of the best villains Marvel has produced but also nowhere close to the worst. He just provides a cocky and arrogant guy that you can root against. Scott’s character development was also amazingly done with him going from being a prison convict and a master thief to becoming Ant-Man. They also thoroughly dive into Hank’s character and show why he wants Scott to become Ant-Man. As in most Marvel movies, there is a good amount of comedy, however, I thought most of it in this movie was well done and not forced. However, that’s what you come to expect with Paul Rudd playing your main character.

I always rate the marvel movies and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are: action, acting, cinematography, pacing, score, characters, ending, plot, protagonist, and antagonist. I rate all of those pieces 1-10 and then after that, I add up the scores of all 10 of them and get a total score out of 100. I gave this movie an 83/100, again it was just a very well-done plot and story with strong characters and a solid antagonist. The only thing that brought this movie down was the pacing at times and some questionable acting at times, however, that usually came from side characters.
