Marvel Reviews: Part 11
Spoiler-free review of Guardians of the Galaxy
Today I will be doing a spoiler-free review of Guardians of the Galaxy. This movie is a personal favorite of mine, mainly because of how different it is from other Marvel movies. The first thing I can say about it is that the characters are absolutely phenomenal. Star Lord/Quill is a very well-written protagonist with a sad backstory because he doesn’t know who his dad is and his mother died when he was young. Rocket is a raccoon who first appears with his friend Groot who is a tree and can only say “I am Groot.” There is Gamora who is trying to fight for herself and rebel against her father. Then there’s Drax who is out for revenge for his family. All of these characters inevitably end up becoming “The Guardians of the Galaxy.” Along with every character being unique and having its own purpose, this entire movie is also a comedy. Every character is very funny in their own way and they all bounce off each other very well. The score in this movie is also fantastic as they mostly just play songs from the 80s but they are all used very effectively.
The villain is a guy named Ronan the Ancestor. This is the only part of the movie that never grasped my interest. He’s not a terrible villain as he looks amazing and is very powerful. However, his motives are somewhat weak as he only wants an orb(which albeit is very powerful) from Quill. They also didn’t give him enough screen time to make me truly care about his character. The plot throughout the movie is still very well written even with a subpar villain. Everything somewhat revolves around the orb, bringing all of our protagonists together in the first place. The action and cinematography are all very well done throughout the movie with cinematography being basically perfect and action being very well used and not overdone.
I always rate the marvel movies and I rate them based on 10 things in the movie. Those things are: action, acting, cinematography, pacing, score, characters, ending, plot, protagonist, and antagonist. I rate all of those pieces 1-10 and then after that, I add up the scores of all 10 of them and get a total score out of 100. I gave this movie a 83/100, it is very well done but the main thing that brings down the score for me is mainly just the antagonist and the pacing at times could’ve been better. There were just some scenes in the movie that just didn’t feel needed but it wasn’t too bad.
