Display case: November

Honoring Nanticoke’s Veterans

In an effort to strengthen the bond between Greater Nanticoke Area School District and the City of Nanticoke, Mr. Litch and Mrs. Scibek have reached out to the Nanticoke Historical Society to set up a display case in the main hallway. Each month the case will have a different themed display involving the history of Nanticoke.

Mr. Litch and Mrs. Scibek, after deciding on a theme, will reach out to Chet Zaremba of the Nanticoke Historical Society. Mr. Zaremba will then look into the Society’s archives, and if a sufficient amount of artifacts fitting the theme are present, he will send them to the school to be a part of that months display.

This month, the theme of our showcase in the main hall was Veterans Day in light of the holiday on the 11th. The Historical Society has donated a number of interesting artifacts to be put on display. There is a photograph of Civil War Veterans from Nanticoke taken on May 30, 1883, along with a photograph of Spanish-American War veterans from Nanticoke. There’s also a local newspaper with the headline of the Vietnam War ceasefire on display.

One of the most profound artifacts on the shelf is the Purple Heart medal which was awarded posthumously to Private Stanley J. Wardecki, an infantryman in World War II from Honey Pot, on November 7th, 1944. Alongside the medal is its certificate and the letter to Stanley’s mother which came with the medal.
