Mr. Figs candle up-cycling
Mr. Figlerski, the basic living skills teacher at GNA, had his students working on a candle up-cycling project. He took wax from other teachers throughout the high school and transformed it back into beautiful candles.
First, he started the process by taking all this wax, including store-bought, and melted it down. Additionally, he put the wax into a measuring cup and put that in a pan of boiling water. Students would choose if they wanted to break up crayons and put it in for color and or add fragrance oil for scent. He then would put a wick into an aluminum can or a glass jar, center it, and then pour the wax in. At the top of the wick, he tied around a pencil/pen to make sure the wick stayed centered as the wax hardens.
Students got creative with the project and made their candles look like sharks, ice cream, and all different types of designs.
