Spice up your winter

If you are a teenager living in Northeast Pennsylvania, trying to figure out what to do on a Saturday night with your friends, there is no doubt that one of them said, “There’s nothing to do in NEPA except going out to eat.” Then you end up going to Gerry’s or Angelo’s again for the same amazing pizza that you have had thousands of times and call it a night. You go home and do the exact same thing the next week, and the week after that, and then again the week after that.

It’s time to break the cycle!

There are plenty of fun things that you can do in the winter here in NEPA, but you just don’t realize it.

Have no fear, The GNA Insider is here to spice up your routine and to help you get away from the same old same old boring lifestyle with a few great winter indoor and outdoor activities.

It seems like everyone says that they hate the cold and that winter weather is the absolute worst. Yes, the snowy season does have its cons, but it also brings with it some great sports that would be impossible if it’s sunny and 75.

A great way to have fun in the coldest season of the year is to hop on a pair of skis or a snowboard and fly down the slopes of Montage Mountain, which is only 35 minutes away.

You say you can’t ski or snowboard? No big deal. Montage has an excellent tubing area with a great magic carpet lift.

If you think this isn’t exciting enough for you, they rent out airboards. An airboard is basically a blow up sled that you can ride down the beginner ski slopes.

Even if you don’t want to spend money at Montage, that’s no problem! We just so happen to have one of the best sleigh riding hills in NEPA right here on the GNA campus.

No matter the choice, downhill winter sports are a great way to enjoy the winter weather!

For some people, the outdoors just isn’t their thing – being indoors is more their speed. This doesn’t mean that they are left out of all the fun for four months of the year.

After a couple of these frigid months, you may want to escape from the icy grasp of winter weather. Does this mean that you need to pack your bags, get on a plane, and enjoy a week in the sun of Cancun, Mexico? No! All you have to do is pack a swimsuit, hop in your car, and drive an hour in the car to Kalahari Resort in the Poconos. You can leave those subzero temperatures behind when you enter the largest indoor waterpark in America where it’s always sunny and a toasty 84 degrees.

Sometimes winter activities don’t have to have anything to do with the seasons at all. It’s always a great time to go down to Jack and Jill’s Billiards for a couple cheap games of pool.

Movies 14 has a weekly special on Tuesdays where movie tickets are only five dollars a piece.

If you still don’t feel like spending the extra money on snacks though, it’s a great idea to have all of your friends come over for a movie party and to just spend time together.

Baking cookies doesn’t have to stop at Christmas but should continue all year round. Devouring a batch of fresh, out of the oven, warm, gooey, chocolate chip cookies can brighten up your life no matter how bad of a day you are having.

Northeast Pennsylvania often gets a bad rap for having nothing to do except going out to eat. Yes, we do have a lot of amazing restaurants, and yes, we go to them more often than other people. However, there are great times to be had in this area. There are plenty more memories to be made in NEPA. All you have to do it go out and make them.
