GNA’s college ready math class visits Luzerene County Community College

On Tuesday, November 7th, 2017, I accompanied Nanticoke’s College Ready Math Class to Luzerne County Community College.

Students arrived at LCCC’s Educational Conference Center where they were welcomed and given presentations by admissions staff. Applications and registrations for the Early College Program were then completed for the Spring offering of Math 101 at Nanticoke High School.

A career assessment session followed where students had an opportunity examine their interests and begin to develop career goals and expectations.  A tour of the main campus was given with visits to various departments where students learned about the different programs that are offered at LCCC. Classroom and labs were visited and students got a sense of the academic environment LCCC provides.

Some other highlights included experiencing the technology used in their graphic arts and audio / video programs, the quality workmanship taught  in their automotive programs, the various labs and equipment available in the sciences, the use of 3D printers and CNC machinery, the dedication of LCCC to develop new and marketable programs such as their 13 bay welding classroom, as well as many other aspects of the campus.

After lunch, Sue Spry, Vice President of Applied Technologies & Workforce Development, gave a presentation encouraging students’ interests and career goals. Mary Sullivan, Director of Student Life & Athletic then gave a presentation of the college sports programs, student ambassadors, student government, student clubs/organizations, and community involvement this is a large part of the “college experience” that she hopes that students embrace as they continue their education.

Students were then transported downtown and given a tour and presentation at health science complex that included seeing the “working” environment and simulators that are used for training. Several students are set to enter the health science department so they were very excited about the opportunity to visit.

Finally, the day finished with a tour of the culinary arts building where students experienced  a working kitchen and learned what is involved in being part of this program at LCCC.
